If I can answer your question it is because Lessig and his ideas would gain more from my direct donation than my paying most of the money to Amazon and the publisher. If Lessig could sell the work directly in electronic form, say for $3.47, both he and I would benefit and the intermediate players could do something else useful. Where did I get the price $3.47 from? It is the difference between the new price and the resale price on Amazon. If I bought the p-book, read it , and resold it at the going rate it would cost me $3.47 plus a little commission. If a buy the e-book I am not allowed to sell it on under Adobe and Microsoft license conditions and it costs me $16.97. Under a system such as Common Rights authors could sell directly for the $3 to $4 figure and everyone would benefit.
