I have so much I want to blog about at the moment, but I've just been up to my eyeballs in stuff, and by the time I get to 10pm, I really don't want to be on the computer anymore.
I have to take my Macbook in for repairs very soon and it's causing me a lot of pain - I have to make sure that everything I have on this machine is available to me when the machine itself is not. This isn't just about convenience - my entire ability to do my job is wrapped up in the data on this chunk of plastic and without it I am totally screwed. Yes, I have a back-up, but it's non-bootable except on another Intel Mac... which I don't have. So I'm preparing my old iBook to act as my spare machine, which is far easier said than done. It would be so much easier if I just had another Intel Macbook, so that I could simply replicate this machine and not have to worry about it all... but I don't, and I am not likely to suddenly have the money to buy one any time soon.
Meantime, I want to blog about that really appalling Panorama program on wifi last night, and the bloody stupid decision XFM made to sack all its daytime DJs. But both those will have to wait.
How is it that I am always so busy? I think I may have to put a lot more effort into employing the 'N' word over the next six months.

Re: The existential pain of taking laptops in for repair
Whenever there's an 'exposé' documentary nowadays, especially one that features any kind of science, I naturally assume it'll be a combination of sensationalist scaremongering and sloppy journalism. Sounds like this Panorama program (which I missed for that very reason) lived up to my expectations.
And I think you've blogged once already about XFM's bloody stupid decision to sack all its DJs, but it's probably good if you keep venting 'til it's all off your chest. Oh, and the 'N' word, it's 'Nincompoop', right? Re: Re: The existential pain of taking laptops in for repair

The XFM post before was about them sacking all their *good* DJs. Now they're sacking all their daytime DJs. Idiots.
And the N word is not 'Nincompoop'. Re: The existential pain of taking laptops in for repair

They are making "modular" laptops soon which can be fixed much easier much like desktops.

Suw, it sounds like what you need is the new software application just about to come out from Carbonite.com in Mac form.
Once installed, Carbonite will keep scanning and auto-updating your entire hard disc to their central servers, anytime you are on a broadband connection. Then you can restore to a different computer anytime you wish. The problem is that until now they have not done a Mac version. You can sign up to do beta for them though. The current FAQ at Carbonite.com says: "We're currently hard at work on a Mac version, and hope to release it in mid 2007. If you'd like to beta test our Mac product, please send an email to beta@carbonite.com with the subject MAC BETA and we'll notify you as soon as the beta is ready to download." huw |
